The Clean Materials Technology Group (CMTG) was founded in 2001 by Prof Jawwad A. Darr with the aim to develop green, fast and controlled methods for the discovery and reproducible scale up manufacture of advanced functional materials. We are one of the UKs leading academic groups in the bottom up flow synthesis, discovery, optimisation and scale-up of advanced functional inorganic materials.  We make materials from the outset with scale up in mind, therefore we are able to go from low technology readiness levels to pilot scale demonstration of materials and devices.

We have a number of synthesis processes and facilties as well as analytical facilities within the group which are avilable for our researchers and associated masters and other students.  In order to maintain safety and good practice, we run a quality system for the training and use of all our facilties.

HIGHLIGHT: FARADAY SEED PROJECT ON HIGH POWER CATHODES

Scale-up manufacturing of next generation ultra-high power Li-ion cathodes: Professor Jawwad Darr and Dr Thomas Ashton of UCL are leading a project to demonstrate the scale-up of a low energy manufacturing route to controlled defect battery cathode powders (see image). The proprietary route works across a wide range of cathode compositional space in both Li– and Na–ion chemistry and could offer up to 90% energy reduction in the final synthesis steps.

The resultant active materials are stable to cycling and have optimised defect structures that can give a >10% high power performance boost, making them of interest to fast charging or motorsport applications. The UCL team, in collaboration with industry partner QinetiQ, will optimise and benchmark the electrochemical performance of these materials in large format multi-layer pouch cells, perform a technoeconomic analysis of the process, and develop a business plan and exploitation strategy for the technology.
